What would happen to your hands and/or feet if all the finger/toe - nails were suddenly gone?

Aren't they bone? But are how much are they part of the skeletal structure to keep your body intact?

But really, what would happen? Does anyone know? What would happen to your hands and/or feet if all the finger/toe - nails were suddenly gone?
Nails are made of keratin, the same stuff as your hair, which is why cutting them doesn't hurt. They are not part of or made of bone, they begin just under the skin at the ';nail root';. There are living cells near the root, so it would be painful if any sort of trauma occured there.

Someone that I know damaged the top of their nail and the whole thing fell off. They didn't damage the root, so the nail grew back, just not smooth and flat anymore. Underneath the nail bed is tender with no nail, but the most pain would occur at the nail ';root'; site. What would happen to your hands and/or feet if all the finger/toe - nails were suddenly gone?
A lot of people who suffer from severe fungus on/under their finger nails or toe nails oftentimes get their nail/s surgically removed. It is extremely painful, but over a period of time, skin will grow where the nail has been removed.
finger and toe nails protect all your nerve endings

so every time you hit the top of your finger it would sting like a .... well, it would sting.
